Discovery Of Protons
Rutherford had obtained hydrogen nuclei by bombarding hydrogen with alpha particles. In 1917, he found that hydrogen nuclei could also be obtained by bombarding nitrogen with alpha particles. From the works of Bohr, Mosley and his own work, Rutherford knew that the positive charge on any atom was a multiple of the charge on a hydrogen nucleus. Also, the atomic mass of many elements was an approximate multiple of the mass of a hydrogen atom.Rutherford concluded that a hydrogen nucleus was a component of all atomic nuclei and he called it a proton.
